I was warmly welcomed into the Papke/Powers family when I first met them almost 10 year ago now, including Grandma Powers. I was so excited to have a grandma in my life again.
Over the years, Tony and I tried to sneak in quality alone time with grandma whenever we could. (We had to share her with her 13 grandchildren, and 6 (soon to be 8) great grandchildren. I cherish this time we had with her whether it be a few moments right before the wonderful Powers Holiday celebrations munching on the cookie platter (before dinner), or some quality time learning to make the famous applesauce so we can share it with the generations to come.
My advise to you, take the time to get to know your grandparents. They have wonderful knowledge to share.

A little about Grandma Powers
Patricia was born November 23, 1921 in Lost Nation, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Mary (McAndrews) Heffron. She graduated from Lost Nation High School in 1938 and attended Mt. Mercy College in Cedar Rapids and taught in the Monmouth Schools. She was married to Raymond J. Powers on June 1, 1944 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lost Nation, Iowa.
They lived on the Powers family farm for over 50 years. She returned to teaching after receiving her BS degree in education and librarian and taught in Delmar, Delwood and Dewitt Central School for several years.
She was a member of St. Patrick’s Church, Alter & Rosary Society, taught religion classes and was active in its ministry, New Century Club and several card clubs. They liked to travel, spent winters in Texas, golfed and spending time with their family. Ray died on June 18, 1998. She is survived by five children, Kathryn (Duane) Papke of Iowa City, James Powers of Clinton, Patrick Powers of Delmar, Elizabeth (Daniel) Kolk of McFarland, Wisconsin, and Mary (James) Black of Onawa; 13 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren; a brother, Dr. John (Patricia) Heffron of Omaha, Nebraska; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and two sisters, Marie McClimon and Carmel Langenfeld, and a daughter-in-law, Karen.
She died at the age of 88.
